H1b driver license renewal

I live in Indiana. My current DL expires June 30 along with my old H1 visa and I 797

But I do have new I797 approval already with expiry in 2019. I went to DMV to renew my DL based on this, but after looking at my documents, they told me that I CAN NOT APPLY FOR RENEWAL until July 1st when the new I797 dates start. 

It means I will have to deliberately wait for my current DL to expire before applying for renewal even though I already have a valid new I797 for my H1b.

That does not sound right ..

Any suggestions
