Can i file L2 EAD while extension is in progress

I have a complicated case.

My wife landed in US on 10 feb 2015. She had an L2 visa valid till 18 Nov 2018, but her I 94 was valid only till 8 Aug 2015. In the meanwhile, she lost her passport. We applied for a new passport and got it. The new passport does not have the visa stamped.

My i-94 was due to expire on 31 Aug 2015, so I had applied for extension. I applied for her visa extension as well along with mine. Both the applications are under process now. USCIS status shown "case has been received".

Can I apply for my wife's EAD in the meantime? We have her receipt notice. Let me know if more information is needed to answer this.
