Getting married to US sitizen. Obtaining the Green Card

Hello! I have known my future husband for over 8 years. I am originally from the Ukraine. And he is from the USA. Right now I am in the USA, on visit visa, and wedecided to get married. My visa is valid till the end of may and then i have to go back home.

My question is: What is the prosidure of getting a green card, if my husband is in th US and im outside the country? Im planning to come back here in october, but before that i have to stay in the Ukraine. I wanted to know if he is able to start the prosess without me being here? And on what type of visa should i return to the USA in october?
