baidurja
This post is related to an issue with opening online CD or savings accounts. I am currently on H1B but I have been in the US since 2008 (5 years on F1 prior to H1B). So, I am a resident for tax purposes but non-resident for immigration purposes. If you want to open an online CD, most online banks have the statement: You must be US citizen or legal resident. My question is whether this means resident for tax purposes or immigration purposes? It seems to me that tax purposes is appropriate for this case, but I wanted to make sure so that I do not 'lie' when I am opening an online account and earning interest. Thank you. Link to comment
