subh9
Hi I entered US on H4 and got H1B approved in Sep 2014. I applied for my SSN today. I want to know if there will be any problem in this as I am not sure if my COS has been done or not. Please help as I got a job offer and because of not having SSN things are getting complicated for me. Also, I want to know if I can know my SSN earlier before getting the actual SSN card which will take 2 weeks. Thanks a lot in advance! Link to comment
jairichi
If your H1B was filed when you were in US and approved as COS and I797 has an I94 attached to it and you did not travel when waiting for USCIS decision on H1B petition then you are on H1B status from the day of approval or Oct 1st. Employers can run payroll temporarily without having an SSN. Link to comment
JoeF
What do you mean with "you don't know if COS was done"? You would have gotten a new I-94 with the status listed as H1 if it was a COS. You needed to show your I-94 when you applied for an SSN. So, you obviously DO know if you are in H4 or H1 status.
