How to maintain GC status

Recommended Posts

I got my green card and will be doing the intial entry in the next few months.

I do travel back and forth Asia and US for family reasons.

I have heard that friends who stayed in Asia being warned by custom officer that he shouldn't be staying outside of US for too long.  And I read that if you stay outside of the US for 6 months you could loose your GC.

Anyone willing to share their thoughts?

Ed

As a Permanent Resident, you have to live in the US. It is called "Permanent Residence" for a reason.

All travel abroad has to be temporary in nature, with a clear ending date.

And long travel abroad can indeed be an indication that the person isn't living in the US, which would indicate abandonment of the GC.

In short: make the US your home, where you live and work. Or give up the GC.

Visiting abroad is OK. Living (including working) outside the US is NOT permanent residency. Either move to the US and visit elsewhere or give up/decline the GC and obtain a US visitors visa.
