H1B - liability

All, Please help me in this regard.

When I had L1 Visa, I approached one desi consulting for filing my H1B and got approved. I paid $1300 for them. After that I called them so many times and didn't get any response from them. Meanwhile, my company who sponsored L1 visa, filed GC petition. I am currently having EAD and using it. Also, I got the H1B visa through e-mail a year back. But didn't get response from the consulting company.

All of a sudden, they sent me a lawyer notice for asking liability for filing and processing the H1B - $5000. Can someone please advice me on this ?

To begin with, you should not have paid anything. As you found out, companies that ask for money for the H1 are shady.

As for the notice, it depends on what documents you signed. There are some parts of the H1 fees that the employer has to pay, for the rest, it depends on what contract was signed.

You may want to see a good immigration laywer.
