My passport is expiring in Aug 2012.Latest by when do I need to renew my passport? is there any time line before I need to extend/renew?My H1 got approved recently. Do I need to submit my h1 copy for extension ?Pls suggest me.

you can apply for reissue of passport , one year prior to expiry.

Call your country's consulate and ask them if you need to send a copy of your I-797. I was asked to send mine because they need to make sure you are legal here. You know that you can call the consulate and clear with them on the documents they require.
