H4 to H1B - Travel Question

I have two questins regarding travel to India

1. My Spouse has H4 visa till 09/2013, my company applied for her H1B visa (starting 10/2011), which was approved yesterday. Can she travel to India on her H4 visa from Mid Aug '11 to mid september '11? Would there be any problem at Port of entry? Does she need H1B stamping to re-enter?

2. As she was on H4, and now she has approved H1B, she would require SSN to work. Can she get her SSN now? or she has to wait till October (when her H1B visa status begins)?
