EAD Renewal application pending - Applied late

Hi -

I would like to know if its even valid if I take a unpaid leave of absence with a letter from the company stating that (or unpaid LOA are allowed only in cases of medical circumstances?) or do I need resign or have my company terminate my employment?

P.S: I just need to know if unpaid LOA is valid, and please no bashing for asking this question, I just couldn't find a solid answer to it. Also I know I screwed up by filing late and I'm regretting it big time.

Any info would be very much appreciated.
