goutham31
I got laid-off recently and I am on green card. My severance pay is for 9 weeks, until the end of March 2021. I reside in the state of Illinois. My severance pay will not be paid in lump sum, but rather paid bi-weekly, as usual, as before. Can I file for unemployment benefits while receiving severance pay? Please help. Quote Link to comment
pontevecchio
"you may be entitled to unemployment benefits even if you're getting severance. But the specific rules around that vary from state to state." Illinois Unemployment Insurance Law Handbook "You are allowed to get both severance pay and unemployment. Illinois considers severance pay as money you receive for work you did during the time you were employed. Since your severance pay is not considered income, it will not usually affect your unemployment benefits." Quote Link to comment
JoeF
You can get unemployment benefits while having a GC. This is not public help, it comes out of an insurance all employers pay into. As for receiving unemployment while getting severance, that probably depends on the rules for the state. Quote Link to comment
