I-797 expired while 221g Admin Processing in progress

221g Admin processing is in progress and is delayed for a long time due to COVID and the bans in effect. 

The problem is that my I 797 is about to expire in couple of weeks. What if 221g processing is not completed before that? 

This is my first visa stamp attempt on this H1B petition. I have not travelled to USA . Can I extend/renew my petition even though I have never got a visa stamped?

what your employer says? it is interesting issue... better consult immigration attorney...

As far as I know, if you haven't travelled or worked on H1B, you cannot extend that petition. Your best chance is to hope you get your visa or your employer needs to apply for a new petition.
