Insurance for Parents

Recommended Posts

My wife is sponsoring both of her parents to immigrate to the US. She isn't currently working so I will end up being the co-sponsor for her parents. When they arrive next year her father will be 65. I know they are not eligible for medicare or medicade, but when they apply for insurance through the marketplace (Obamacare), will their premiums be based on my income since I'm the co-sponsor? The reason I ask is because they will have very little income from their farm in India which is usually cash transactions, so there won't be any documentation to provide to show their income. Also, do assets apply or is it just income that needs to be reported? I have looked at plans here in Nevada for them and they are showing $1,300-$1,500 per person which we would not be able to afford. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

They will need to file US Taxes on whatever Income they claim in India and report assets more than USD 100000 to the IRS.

Their premiums are based on their Income and not Yours.
