US passport and OCI renewal

Hello Everyone,

Need some help and guidance on the renewal of US passport and OCI during this pandemic situation. We are planning to move back to India in the next few months (hopefully in Sept). The problem we are facing is our kids are US-born and their passport is about to expire in December (along with OCI), so we need to know,

  • Can we travel to India (if required we might take AirIndia non-stop to avoid any other nation's rules/restrictions) with a passport that is supposed to expire in less than 3 months?
  • Once we are in India, if local US passport service doesn’t open before Dec, can kids legally stay in India with expired OCI and passport without any trouble?
  • If we encounter these unfortunate situations, is there any process to avoid or circumvent this, maybe by explaining this to local police or law officers that concerned offices are all closed?
  • Since we plan to move back to India permanently, other than school admission where else we might need to show the kids' passport/OCI?
  • Can we get any other identity proof for kids born in the US in India other than OCI?

Thank you in advance.

Thanks User099  for the reply, as far as I can say passport renewal is only for those who are in dire need, here is the snippet from US dept of state website

"As of Wednesday, July 1, a total of 16 passport agencies and centers are in phase one of our three-phase reopening plan. During phase one, we are limiting appointments to customers who must travel internationally in the next 72 hours due to a life-or-death emergency. "
