H1, expired VISA stamp, valid I797 / I94. Travel to Puerto Rico and USVI

Hi all,

I plan to travel to US Virgin Island. I did some research, it turn out I have to go through CBP before returning from USVI. Does latest travel affect me? My VISA stamp expired but I have valid I797 and I94.

I never plan to leave US soil in USVI. Is that possible I still got rejected at CBP @ St Thomas
