FMLA while on H1B extension

Hello Forumites. 

Can anyone tell what the rules are to seek FMLA leave while the H1B extension processing is still on? I am on my second extension and due to covid it did not go through via premium processing. My application was filed in April and we have received the notification of receipt, It seems like the approval won't arrive for another 6 months. During this time can I go on an FMLA leave that might require traveling out of the US? Will it impact the extension process? Thank you.

Hi can we get paid FMLA from government based on public charge rule?
