Travel when H1B extension is in Process

Hello,

I am on H1 visa and expiring on 05-FAB-2019. We would like to apply extinction for both H1 and H4 in Dec18, or Jan19. 

H4 planned to travel India on 01-JAN--2019 for 3 months.

Is it advisable to travel during the extensions is in process? Or do I need to go for H1 extension alone if want to travel?

 

Note: No changes in the client and employer for extension
