Travel to India through UK with an expired H1B visa

I am on an expired H1B visa along with my family (H4), but my extension petition has been approved and I have a valid petition until 2020. I have booked my non-refundable flight tickets for our travel to India through UK. Will we be allowed to travel through UK with an expired US visa on our passports? I hear people saying that UK visas and immigration will not issue transit visa for Indian passport holders. The price quoted by the travel agent to travel through a different route via Hong Kong is way too high. Hence am now in a fix. Please advise if there is any other alternative.
