H1B extension, I-140 denied

Hello, if I get H-1B extension for a year based on the fact that my I-140 has been pending for over a year. If subsequently, my I-140 is denied what happens to my H1-B status? do I lose that as well or do I get to keep for now since technically the extension was for a year?
