aptrent04
Hi - I am on a green card status and planning to apply for citizenship in near future. As you know recently we have a new rule which might be going to implement soon where if a GC candidate use any public welfare programs including Obamacare can be denied citizenship. To let you know I used Obamacare but paid full price of 1600$ a month in open market. Will this be a problem when I apply for citizenship. I do appreciate input on my question. Thanks Link to comment
JoeF
The ACA aka Obamacare is not public aid. It is an insurance you pay into. So there is no problem. Link to comment
Provence
Do you have a source/link to this new rule? Link to comment
pontevecchio
Obama Care is not public aid. There is no such rule as you describe. Maybe the civics part of the Immigration Interview should be much wider in scope. Link to comment

The recent article is here: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/now-trump-administration-wants-limit-citizenship-legal-immigrants-n897931 That article doesn't have the text of the draft rule. But this proposal has been previously reported on, and here is an article with text of the draft rule from March (paywall): https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/trump-proposal-would-penalize-immigrants-who-use-tax-credits-and-other-benefits/2018/03/28/4c6392e0-2924-11e8-bc72-077aa4dab9ef_story.html Text of the draft from the that article is here: http://apps.washingtonpost.com/g/documents/world/read-the-trump-administrations-draft-proposal-penalizing-immigrants-who-accept-almost-any-public-benefit/2841/ Link to comment

So, my statement stands. The ACA is not public aid. The OP said he paid full price, so it looks like he didn't claim the tax credit. Link to comment
atewani
There may be another flavor to this question. If a Green card has availed unemployment benefits, after getting green card, does he/she fall under the preview of new policy released by USCIS? Per the new policy/memo, the USCIS would prioritize removal of aliens, who has abused any program related to receipt of public benefit Would availing SNAP/Children Health Insurance program fall under this as well? Any inputs would be great thanks Link to comment
JoeF
Unemployment benefits come out of an insurance that all employers pay into. Certainly not public aid. Link to comment
