MD2018
Based on a recommendation, my older neighbor engaged a handyman to perform a few home improvements and repairs. She found out he is undocumented and is concerned that she's going to be liable for hiring him as an independent contractor. It looks like there is no legal obligation to verify residency status for an independent contractor that performs sporadic work unless the person engaging the contractor had good reason to know that the contractor was undocumented. Practically speaking, how likely is that the law would be enforced against her? Does the government typically enforce these rules against homeowners hiring a handyman, even if the homeowner had reason to know the undocumented status? To put her mind at ease and if true, I'd like to be able to tell her that, regardless, homeowners aren't charged with this sort of violation. Thanks for your help. Link to comment
