Travel outside USA with EAD / AP

My wife is in H1B and has approved I140. Her & my (as beneficiary) EB1 GC is WIP. I have valid L1A stamped till May & am nearing maxout. Can I convert to I485EAD without renewing L1A? If I have to travel to India while GC is pending, can I use EAD/AP card to reenter, even if I do not have any valid visa/approved petition? Or should I convert to H4?

Please share your experience about reentry using EAD / AP, without any valid visa stamp or approved petition. Is there a mandatory secondary inspection? What happens there? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

AP is what you would use to return. First return after AP usually means secondary Inspection. Since you are not the primary, the secondary Inspection would be routine.
