Oath ceremony in April, India travel in June: Visa or OCI?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My spouse and daughter have oath ceremony on April 17th and their India travel is on June 16th.
We are planning to apply for US passport immediately on April 17th or 18th in expedited mode, so expecting to get them by the end of April.
That will leave us with one and a half month to apply for renunciation of Indian passport and apply for Indian visa. I hope that is more than enough time to do it.

I am wondering if we can apply for OCI instead of Indian Visa provided there is an expedited mode for it. I do not find any such information on CKGS web site.
FYI, it took almost 2 months to covert PIO to OCI card for my other daughter, who is a Citizen by birth.

Appreciate your inputs/advice.

Thanks,
Mrc

OCI cards are getting recently processed within 4 to 6 weeks so you have a good chance of getting OCI before your travel date. If not then you can apply for visa of arrival which needs to be done 3 days before travel date.

I would not hold my breath on OCI processing in time, there official processing times are 60-80 "Business Days", which for India excludes all weekends, all US public holidays and All Indian holidays!!

Renunciation is a two weeks process from end to end (by mail).

Hi, Just a question on this, may be I have to create separate post for this but see if anyone can clarify it here..

I heard OCI card may have issues later for kids as some people in USA consider it as dual citizenship, so they may face issues where there is need of high level of clearance or something...

Please clarify on this if OCI is really good option to go for or visa is fine to be safe?

OCI does not grant Indian citizenship. Also India do not allow dual citizenship but USA do.

I've applied for my OCI as well as Renunciation of Indian passport recently in Mid January and got everything processed and done in exactly 5 weeks.

hi sp_0826

Can you please share the links / guidance on

a) OCI

b) Renunciation of Indian Passport - I am guessing you have done it by snail mail (one of them -like USPS or FedEX/UPS etc)

Appreciate your help.
