Promotion to Manager after I-140 approval

Hi All,

        My GC is applied based on Sr.Software Engineer job description. I got my I-140 approved now.  I have a chance of getting promoted to Manager role with added responsibilities to my Sr.Software Engineer Job.  I will still code and also Manage the team.  Will I have to reapply my green card if I get promoted ?  My company lawyer is saying they have to amend my H1b and re-apply GC and  can keep my priority date.

            I am really frustrated on that part of reapplying by GC , I thought on Jan 17th 2017 some rule has been passed where we can take promotions without any hassle.  Can anybody please throw some light on this whole process and let me know if I can take promotion without going to GC process again.
