Traveling on OPT with infant

I came to India for family emergency with my 1 year old son (USA passport). I am on F1 (valid till may 2018) with OPT and have a volunteer job offer starting from sep 1st. I am travelling to USA on 22nd  August but little concerned with what will be the consequences at port of entry.

On other side, my son's Indian visa is valid till Aug 28th only. I called up Indian embassy and found out that we cannot extend his visa and he need to exit india for atleast 24 hrs and apply for fresh visa to enter after 28th.

There should not be any issues on your return, work with local officials on emergency visa given the situation that he's infant or travel to neighboring country for a day or 2, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Srilanka etc.
