I- 94 Renewal due to my old passport expried

Hi, Can anyone please help me how can i renew my i 94. I have valid visa till 2018. When i spoke to few of my friends  they suggested me cross the border and come back to US. so i am planning to cross the mexico border at lerdo through land from texas and  do i need to stay in mexico to get my new i 94 or shall i just cross the border and comeback. please someone suggest me what to do and wht the best way to do this one. Please suggest the best to do
