What is my H1B Start date

Hi,

I finished my masters in 2010 and my employer field an H1B for me in 2010 and was approved. I was on F1 at the time my H1B was approved. I797 on my H1b petition approval is from oct 1, 2010.

I was in US all this time and I  exited US in September 2012. My H1b was stamped for the first time in September and entered back October 2012. So IS my H1b start date considered the day I came back to US in 2012 or October 1, 2010 the start date on my I797.

The start date is the start date of the H1 petition, i.e., Oct. 1, 2010.
