I 94 expired with passport expiration

Hi,

 

My i-94 expired with passport(old). Got the new passport.

My H1b is not expired until Aug. Can i file H1b extension, so I-94 will be updated or do i need go out of country and comeback.

Update:

Traveled out of country, no questions asked at port of entry.
