Wordings on I-797 receipt for combo card

Hi All,

I got a combo card (EAD + AP) for my wife recently. Reading through the approval notice (I-797), it says that "Each parole shall not exceed one year from the date of the parole at the port of entry". I am confused with the meaning of this statement.

 

Does it mean that if I go abroad and come back to US, I cannot stay more than one year ?

OR

Should I have to travel outside the states again within one year ?

I am not sure what it means. But i remember the POE officer giving me just 1 year from my entry date (a couple of weeks plus). But when i spoke to the deffered inspection point the officer told me i should be good until the date on my AP. But i would get a legal opinion in case.
