Requesting new citizenship interview date if applicant abroad

Hello,

I am wondering, is it going to be frowned upon or work to our deteriment, if a request is made for a new Citizenship interview date, rescheduling it by say, a month?

This is for an elderly parent who went abroad despite being cautioned not to. We did not anticipate that the interview will come so quickly. The return ticket is for 3 weeks after the interview date. If the applicant applies for rescheduling the date by mail, sighting the reason as not being in the country, is this a sure case  for a dismisal or any other form of adverse action?
