H1 and H4 Extension - I94 extended only on current visa and not on new approved visa

My H1 and H4 expires in 2 weeks. My extension is approved as I can see the status on USCIS website, however I have not received the approved I797 yet. In this situation can I travel out of country and return back to US before my current H1 stamping on my passport expires? What happens in case of I94 would I get the I94 for current valid visa or the new I797 period? My question above is for both H1 and H4 visas...

You can travel but you will need new I797 to enter US.
