Hi All,

I have finished first 2 semesters of my Masters on H4 visa (valid until Sep 2015). My next semester starts on Aug 25th. I want to be on F1-visa for the next 2 semesters . Since, its late to do COS from H4 to F1, I decided to get an appointment next week for my F1 stamping in Vancouver, CA.  I then stumbled across this from the us consulate site,

Consular officers in Canada may refuse to issue a visa to first-time F1 applicants if the applicant's education and/or work experience is solely or predominantly from a country other than the United States or Canada. In the absence of U.S. or Canadian education or work experience, we strongly encourage you to apply from your country of residence.

Also, my husband's has an I140 approved from his previous employer. Does this make me a potential immigrant?

I am now having second thoughts about going to canada for the visa appointment. I would appreciate any inputs from you all. Has anybody gotten F1 stamping successfully in a similar scenario?

@jairichi...thanks for your response. But, i managed to get an appointment at vancouver consulate this friday. I have been constantly monitoring appointment availability and I got one couple of days back. Could you tell me why TNCs are not allowed to do visa interview at Canada? I will also try to contact them as well.

Sorry it is TCN (Third Country Nationals). If you have an appointment you are good to go. Due to enormous workload for Canadian citizens they have decided to restrict new appointment dates for TCN.

U.S. Consulates in Canada Suspend Third Country National Visa Processing for Summer

JUNE 5, 2014 BY **********************

June 5, 2014 – U.S. Consulates in Canada have temporarily suspended all visa processing for Third Country Nationals for the summer months of June, July and August. This suspension only applies to Third Country Nationals, Canadian applicants are unaffected. If you are a Third Country National with an appointment already scheduled during the summer months, your appointment is also unaffected.

Because consulates in any country prefer the citizens of the country where that consulate is located. Its main purpose is to provides services to that country's citizens. I you need visa then you should attend interview at your home country, moreover if something goes wrong during the interview you get struck in that country and you got no option other than going to your home country.

Appreciate your response. I did call the us consulate call centre and they have said we will honor the appointment for TNC.

Thanks for the response. I believe some applicants have managed to get appointment possibly because there were cancellations. I started filling out my DS160 160 too and really didn't check this update on their website...too bad on my part

Yes. In a recent post there was one person who was able to obtain appointment recently. As you pointed out it might be due to cancellations.

Why don't you go to your Home country then?

@F1Struggle

About why TCNs have limited availability this time - It seems like there is heavy demand from Canadian residents who are getting US visas this summer. So, others get lesser appointments. I suggest you keep checking if you want to get an appointment.
