Insurance on GC (outside of US for next 5 months)

I am an independent consultant on GC. Do I need health insurance if I will be outside of US for next 5 months? None of the "cheaper" plans (tho still pretty expensive) that I have looked at provide outside US coverage.

In that case it would not make sense to purchase them. I am concerned how obama care requirements will effect me. I would like to play by the rules and not be penalized.

If one is out of US for 5 months, is he exempted for that period?

Why do you need US health insurance when you are outside US?

  • 5 months later...

US citizens living outside the US for at least 330 days in a one-year period don’t need to be covered under the PPACA – Obamacare – nor will you be fined if you don’t have any US healthcare insurance. But this doesn’t apply to you because you are only going to be out of the country for five months. If you don’t have US health insurance coverage for this five-month period you will be penalized. One option is to opt-out of purchasing healthcare insurance for the periods you will be away and then pay the non-coverage tax penalty, which may or may not be less than the cost of maintaining premiums for when you don’t need them. You should make sure you have travel health insurance for when you leave the country. Take a look at this article http://www.**************.com/ for more details about permanent residents and Obamacare.
