Travel with passport expiring in 3 months

I may have to travel to India this week for a family emergency. My Indian passport is expiring in 3 months. I am in a dilemma if I should apply for a passport renewal via the tatkal process which can take a few days. I read somewhere that Indians are exempt from the standard 6 month passport validity requirement. Has anyone been in my boat? What do you suggest?
