Child on Green Card applying for US passport

We are planning on applying for a passport for our 5 year old son. He is currently on green card and lives with us (Dad and Mom) in the US. Dad is a US citizen and Mom is a green card holder (awaiting for her Citizenship interview). 

Can we apply directly for a US passport or do we have applying for a cetificate of citizenship N-600.

Any help on this would be great.
