Can LPRs with greencards be coerced to sign I-407????

I am receiving text messages that the immigration authorities are coercing people with LPR to sign form I-407 (abandonment of residency/greencard) when they are leaving the US to visit home.

Is it just a rumor or has anyone heard of this??

If this is true, what can a person do and what are his/her rights?

Thanks.

Coercing is illegal. Tou can refuse to sign. You can ask for a lawyer to be present.

Of course, after a long flight, people are tired and often don't offer much resistance.

Be polite, but firm, even if it takes a couple of hours. Take notes, write down the names of the officers. Later, get a lawyer and sue the hell out of them.

Personally, I also would take video. The ACLU has an app that uploads video directly to their servers from your smartphone. Even if you don't want to show your phone, recording audio also helps. Btw, this is known to work, e.g., in the Black Lives Matter movement, the Keystone pipeline protests, etc.
